What you give to the universe.

Her name was Karma,
and, i liked it when you
first met her
because she slapped
that pretentious
smile off your face,
leaving you stunned,
but i never understood
why the shock,
since you were
always fake and ugly,
on the inside.
what more could
you possibly
deserve?
i'd say
you hit it off
right from the start.
yeah, karma,
the perfect mirror.

An Ode to Frankie Doodle (our new kitty)

You own every space
where you plop your body down,
sleeping oh so gordo.
always amused,
a sock entertains you,
or some random piece of ribbon
dropped to the floor:
a curlicue of delight.
your tail swishes
like a fly fishing line
waiting to snag
an unsuspecting mark,
or bully the chihuahuas
while you tornado
through the house.
you rule your castle.
King Frankie Doodle,
and we love you.

A cool exercise!

Sam Green, Washington State's Poet Laureate, came to my class today and talked with kids about poetry.
In one of his sessions he shared this rockin' activity wtih the kids, and I found myself completley inspired!
OK, so you make three columns on your paper: adjectives, concrete nouns, abstract nouns.

ugly shoes love
baggy guitar truth
soft cup honor
old river grief
good mountain courage
rough dog sadness
curly car intelligence
purple moon anger
skinny house happiness
broken frying pan hunger

Next you fill in the blanks. The (adjective) (concrete noun) of (abstract noun).
Examples: The broken cup of courage. The old shoes of grief. The purple moon of happiness.
Then you take the phrase and make it into a poem.

The broken cup of courage
tottered on the table,
while he walked away,
leaving her to wonder
what he needed to say.

************************

Still walking in them,
more because I can't
throw away these
old shoes of grief;
they are my comfort.
worn perfectly:
holes in the toes,
separated souls,
fadedgreen with
laces frayed.
the gatekeepers
to my memory lane.

Ode to an Online Game, I Love

literati

tap, tap
letters into words,
too many vowels or none.
7-letter words rock!
double word bonus points,
triple letter, too.
and how about
those obscure words
like zeba or sclerae?
meet me in the intermediate lounge.
do you yahoo?

Color poems

brown
looks like cody's beautiful eyes,
smells like my hands after riding the horse,
tastes like my coffee sweetened with creamer,
feels like sand crinkling between my toes,
sounds like a rodeo
brown is not boring!

retro with pink:

pink
feels like baby lotion
looks like the sunset streaks on the ocean
smells like hibiscus
tastes like cotton candy
sounds like girls giggling
rosa

Do you see the ABC's?

absolutely bullocks:
creating doubt,
even fathomable,
greedy honesty,
ironic juxtaposition
kills lovely
monsters newly
opened, perfectly.
quivering rasps,
sliver thoughts,
under veils
worthwhile eXploding:
you'r zero.

Life soundtrack

I love music, and I love finding songs that fit things in my life perfectly. Enjoy my soundtrack.

Sunny Day - Sesame Street - Joe Raposo, Jon Stone & Bruce Hart
When I was a little girl, I LOVED Sesame Street, and if you think about the words to Sesame Street, they are perfect!! "Sunny Day, sweeping the clouds away

Oh I Went to the Animal Fair
- not sure who is the original artist
My dad taught me this song, and all of my kids know it, too. It's fun to sing in the car at the top of our lungs!!!

Skiddamarinky Dinky Dink - not sure who is the original artist
I learned this song when my sister was little, and then I have taught it to all of my kids, and even Ricky knows how to sing it, too!! I taught it to him when we first started dating :) And, he used to sing it to me!!

Jump - Van Halen
OK, simple and sweet, this song goes in my life soundtrack because it was played at the first dance I ever went to in middle school in California. I remember how a bunch of us were jumping off the stage every time the song said, "JUMP!"

Summer Lovin' - John Travolta and Olivia Newton John
Grease is my all-time favorite movie/musical, and this song is my favorite in the movie, although I must admit it's hard to choose one. I even directed the musical when I taught in Cashmere, and that's one of my best experiences in my life!

Closing Time - Semisonic
I have a good friend, and this is one of our favorite songs. We know that things happen for a reason.

Here I Go Again - Whitesnake
When I graduated, this was our song. I love it! Every time I hear it, I think about high school, which for me rocked! I had many good times, and I loved the big hair music (still do).

Dear Mama - Tupac
I gave Cody Tupac's book of poems for graduating from middle school, and it is one of his favorite books, and he told me that he thinks of me whenever he hears this song.

If I Could Make A Living
- Clay Walker
Jordan LOVED all of Clay Walker's music when he was little. We even took him to a Clay Walker concert, and we were in the third row, and Clay pointed right at Jordan. Jordie even sang the song at the talent show when he was in Kindergarten!!!! Too cute, and he still loves Clay's music.

Gangsta's Paradise
- Coolio
This is one of my all-time favorite rap songs. I loved the movie Dangerous Minds, which had this song on its soundtrack.

When You Say Nothing At All - Alison Krauss
I know this is a remake, but I LOVE this song, and I definitely feel this way about Rick.

Fuel - Ani DiFranco
I just love her politics and edge. It reminds me of the summer that I spent up at Pelican Lake!

One Week - Barenaked Ladies
This is my favorite song by the Barenaked Ladies, and the boys and I went and saw them in concert at the Gorge! It rocked!!

Walk this Way - Run DMC and Aerosmith
I love this old school rap, and I remember when this song came out; it was such a cross-over between rock and rap!!

Proud to be an American - Lee Greenwood
This song is obvious, as my son is a Marine, and I am one proud MAMA! I have always loved this song way before my son was even considering joining up.

Still the One
- Shaina Twain
Rick and I consider this our song, and it fits us perfectly, especially if you know us :)

Only Time - Enya
This song has the perfect sound and the perfect words.

Be Happy - Lighthouse Family
I love this band, and it makes me think of my trip to London!

Rock and Roll All Nite - Kiss
I saw these guys in concert at the Gorge, and I did NOT expect them to rock my socks off, but they did!!!

Let it Be - Beatles
I am a huge fan of the Beatles, and I have loved them since I was little! This song is my most favorite for what it says. AND, when I hear the Beatles, I think of the time I actually walked on Abbey Road in London!
